Introduction

The College has calculated its Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions with 2017 used as the baseline year. The footprint is recalculated every year, and from 2019, Scope 3 emissions have started to be included.

From 2017 to 2024, the total Scope 1 and 2 emissions (excluding offset) have decreased by 25%.

Summary of Footprint

The college's reporting year runs from 1 April to 31 March. The baseline year is 2017-18. Scope 3 data has been added for waste from 2019-20, meat from 2022-23, and computer purchases from 2020-21 (first calculated in 2023-24). The data from baseline to present can be found here, together with information on how each element has been calculated.

2017-2025 footprint

The increase in gas consumption in 2021 is due to the completion of ·¬ºÅ¿âapp St Regis, new graduate accommodation, which replaced an older building that was demolished in 2018. The significant change in waste footprint in 2023-24 compared with 2022-23 and 2024-25 reflects a difference in how the College’s waste provider disposed of general waste. In 2023-24, it was incinerated, however in the other years it has been partially or wholly sent to landfill.

Even with the inclusion of additional Scope 3 elements, gas use remains the most significant component of the College’s footprint, accounting for 46% of the total footprint.

Elements included for the first time in 2024-25 are: batteries, books, electrical building supplies (partial), electricity transmission and distribution, flooring, furnishings, internal decoration, paper, and white goods. Tracking these elements allows the College to make more informed procurement decisions.

The graphs below show the breakdown of the different elements of the footprint.
